SHKP Book Club's Chinese Cultural Week well received

08 Aug 2005

The five-day Chinese Cultural Week at Sha Tin's New Town Plaza (between 4 and 8 August) by SHKP Book Club of the Group has proven very popular. A large number of Chinese cultural fans and book lovers attended the book fair and the various cultural shows. Parents and children at the shows were often quite amused by the guests and performers.

The book fair was divided into six zones: Chinese Culture; Leisure Lifestyle; Parenting; English Corner; Pop Culture; and Interactive Activities. Books on Chinese history and culture were most appealing. These were followed by books on pop culture. Children liked the Parenting zone most, which offered a variety of interesting books. The Club also recently nominated 30 Chinese and English titles about "Home" for its "10 Good Books Poll". People can buy the books at the fair and many filled out the ballot on the spot for their favourite book to join the lucky draw.

Visitors were drawn to an array of exciting performances and activities about Chinese culture in the Footbridge Gallery during the weekend. Chinese medicine practitioners Li Ling Hon and C.S. Kwong explained to them the medical values and benefits of herbs, offering tips on how to stay healthy with various Chinese herbal soup formulas. The practitioners answered many questions related to health. Peter Lam and Andy Ho gave a talk entitled "Three Empires - who's the winner?", in which the speakers and the audience had a lively discussion on the subject. Some audience members received prizes for their unique views.

The event highlight came when renowned Kung Fu teacher Li Fai and a group of children gave a stellar demonstration of Kung Fu and Tang poetry at the same time. The children received loud applause when they performed difficult martial art tasks. A performance by a children's choir singing Chinese folk and tribal songs added to the atmosphere.
