Sun Hung Kai Properties (SHKP) Book Club is fostering a reading culture in Hong Kong with more than 2,000 entries received for the first round of its book review competition. The Club has earmarked an annual budget of HK$10 million for a series of events, including seminars and major book fairs. As part of this ongoing campaign, the Club is holding the "10 Good Books" Poll, nominating 30 books on the theme of "Home" for public voting.

Guided by the "Building Homes with Heart" spirit, SHKP strives to promote education. It has sponsored many education and youth-related programmes over the years as part of its keen belief in life-long learning. The Club was set up in response to this faith in education, by which SHKP hopes to play its part in the promotion of a reading culture in Hong Kong. In May, the Club recommended a list of good books and held a book review competition. The latest "10 Good Books" Poll is aimed at sustaining this reading culture.

Several notable judges and an advisor joined the organizer in launching the poll at a press conference today (August 3), including SHKP Vice Chairman & Managing Director Dr Raymond Kwok, President of The Open University of Hong Kong Prof. John Leong Chi-yan, Chairman of Commission on Youth Dr Philemon Choi Yuen-wan, Senior Instructor of Department of Government and Public Administration at The Chinese University of Hong Kong Mr Ivan Choy and Director of Federation of Hong Kong Writers Ms Chau Mat-mat. The Chairman of the Standing Committee on Language Education and Research Mr Michael Tien, an advisor to the SHKP Book Club, was also present.

Dr Kwok said: "In today's knowledge-based economy, reading is the only way to enhance competitiveness. Knowledge has the power to take us to new horizons and reading is what we can rely on to broaden our international perspective. Because we realize reading is an asset that benefits people's growth, we are organizing the book review competition, various shows and seminars to encourage people's interest in reading."

Cast a vote and get a chance to win fabulous prizes

The Club is nominating 30 books on the theme of "Home" for public voting. Some are stories about brotherhood or the relationship between father and son; others explore a couple's relationship or inspire children's mental development. The poll starts today and closes on September 23. The public can cast their votes through the Internet, or by mailing or faxing the completed polling form. Only one vote per book can be cast on each form. The 10 highest-scoring books will form the list for the second round of the book review competition to be held in October.

If the book you vote for turns out to be among the 10 favourite books, you will be automatically entered into the lucky draw with chances to win fabulous prizes. The first, second and third prize winners will receive book coupons worth HK$3,000, HK$2,000 and HK$1,000 respectively, along with 200 merit prizes each of HK$200 book coupons. The results will be announced on October 6 on the Club's website, Sing Tao Daily and The Standard.

Well-written entries received during the first round

More than 2,000 entries were received during the popular two-month book review competition on positive living that recently closed. About 400 schools took part in the competition despite the exam season. Entrants came from different backgrounds, including a six-year-old kindergartener, a 68-year-old retiree, whole families, cancer patients and, disabled people. Despite their varying life experiences, their pieces have proved to be equally inspiring in the exploration of what the gift of life means.

Each category had three top entries selected as winners. Some were short stories, while others were letters or poems. This creativity was noted by the judges.

More exciting activities coming

The SHKP Book Club will continue to hold major events in order to help boost the quest for knowledge in Hong Kong. The "Chinese Cultural Week" will be staged shortly, with a major book fair, a series of seminars and other activities. Discounts will be offered on the 30 nominated books. It is hoped that these activities will encourage people to read more.
