Ten winners announced in fourth Young Writers' Debut Competition Post-80s Hong Kong and mainland writers depict local culture

28 Jun 2013

Sun Hung Kai Properties (SHKP) set up the SHKP Book Club to promote reading and creative writing, and the Book Club has staged four Young Writers' Debut competitions with Joint Publishing and helped 33 talented young people get their first books published. The fourth competition was extended to the mainland for the first time, with Hong Kong and mainland veteran writers as the judges and coaches. Ten winning Hong Kong and mainland writers were announced at a press conference on 28 June with SHKP Executive Director and Chief Financial Officer Patrick K W Chan, Joint Publishing General Manager and Sino United Publishing (Holdings) Limited Vice President Li Jiping and Deputy Chief Editor Anne Lee, judges Siu Hak, Edward Lam and Zhang Yadong and the winning authors.

Patrick K W Chan said: "We believe that knowledge can change the future and thus, have been promoting reading and holistic development for years. The entries showed us that Hong Kong and mainland young people share the same dreams and express their hopes for society and the world, though they have diverse cultural perspectives. Their positive energy comes across in words, images and multimedia. We hope young people continue to learn and seize the opportunity to fulfil their potential and aspirations."

Top ten authors interpret 'existence' through multimedia

Young Writers' Debut competitions encouraged over 5,500 young writers to put pen to paper. The latest winners are full of creativity and add personal touches to their stories. One book describes the changes on Sun Street, Moon Street and Star Street, while another considers existence and happiness living in a subdivided flat. Others included short stories with verse and the story of people on a polar adventure, complete with music and illustrations.

Li Jiping said: "Joint Publishing worked with Sun Hung Kai Properties again this year and we made some breakthroughs in the Young Writers' Debut Competition. It was extended to the mainland for the very first time, allowing aspiring authors from both territories to present and exchange ideas in one forum. Judges with multimedia backgrounds from Hong Kong and the mainland brought nice surprises to the competition."

The competition drew impressive entries from Hong Kong and the mainland, featuring a diversity of ideas and topics in formats such as novels, fairy tales, true stories, travelogues, graphics, photos and screenplays. There were also multi-media elements such as music and QR codes, demonstrating the versatile young writers' observations and imagination about things and the world.

About Young Writers' Debut Competitions

Young Writers' Debut competitions by SHKP and Joint Publishing have helped 33 young authors make their debuts since they started in 2006.

SHKP and Joint Publishing staged the fourth competition last year and it was open to mainland authors for the first time. Veteran Hong Kong and mainland creative professionals and writers were the judges and they gave promising authors individual coaching. After a year of hard work, they completed their first books that share the theme of 'existence'. The books will debut at the Hong Kong Book Fair and be distributed in traditional Chinese characters in Hong Kong and simplified Chinese on the mainland.
