17 Dec 2012

The fourth Young Writers’ Debut Competition by Sun Hung Kai Properties (SHKP) and Joint Publishing (H.K.) attracted impressive entries, from which 23 talented young writers have been selected for the final (seewww.shkpbookclub.com/YoungWriters4 for a list of finalists). The judges will give short-listed authors one-on-one coaching in the coming two and a half months as they finish their first books. The competition was open to mainland writers this year and the judges are eight Hong Kong and mainland creative professionals and veteran writers. The SHKP Book Club was founded in 2005 to encourage reading and writing.

Multiple styles and formats

The competition was extended to the mainland this year and generated keen interest in Hong Kong and up north. The entries were of high standard and full of young people’s observation and imagination about things and the world. The creative works accentuate local flavour and international perspectives and feature a diversity of ideas and topics in formats such as fiction, travelogue, graphics, photos and screenplay, leaving a strong impression on the judges.

Coaching by renowned creative professionals

The judges will offer the 23 short-listed authors individual coaching and inspire them to understand creative perspectives, content requirement and market trends as they finish their first books. The winning books will be distributed in Hong Kong and on the mainland and the short-listed authors will each receive HK$3,000 in cash and HK$2,000 in book coupons as encouragement. The best three to eight will be offered contracts with Joint Publishing (H.K.) and SDX Joint Publishing Company (in traditional and simplified Chinese), plus royalties from sales.

Aspiring writers realize dreams

Young Writers’ Debut competitions by SHKP and Joint Publishing (H.K.) have helped 23 young authors get into print since they started in 2006.

The Hong Kong judges this year are cartoonist and lyricist Siu Hak, action-film director Daniel Lee and theatre director and playwright Edward Lam, and from the mainland newspaper editor-in-chief and writer Hu Hong-Xia, Beijing music producer Zhang Ya-Dong, Beijing writer and book series editor-in-chief Zhang Yue-Ran, Shanghai writer Dane Chan and Beijing poet, playwright and screenwriter Zou Jing-Zhi.
